Kate Wiesner is a Washington Spirit defender who has represented the United States Women's National Team. Kate committed to Penn State as a high school freshman, but an ACL tear before her senior season forced her to step away from the game and discover who she was outside soccer. Two more serious injuries during her first two college years limited her playing time, yet the support of a staff that valued her as a person helped her stay resilient and continue pursuing the professional game.
Kate left Southern California for Penn State because she wanted a program that would challenge her technically, add Big Ten grittiness to her game, and develop her character. After college, she adapted to the faster decisions, greater physicality, and constant competition of the professional level, earning a start in her Washington Spirit debut while learning that every new opportunity still had to be earned in training.
A late-night email inviting Kate to a United States Women's National Team camp fulfilled a dream she had carried since childhood. She earned her first international minutes in the opening match and started the second, approaching the higher standards of camp with a simple mindset: learn, compete, enjoy the moment, and keep focusing on the process.
Kate grew up playing backyard matches with her father, a former college soccer player. She always claimed Team USA, leaving him to choose another country.
