Russ Grimm is a Pro Football Hall of Fame guard, three-time Super Bowl champion, and foundational member of Washington's celebrated Hogs offensive line. After retiring as a player following the 1991 season, he began a long NFL coaching career in 1992. On The Sideline, Russ joined former teammate Donnie Warren to reflect on championship preparation, demanding coaches, enduring team chemistry, and why children should have the freedom to play multiple sports and enjoy being kids.
Russ arrived in Washington in 1981 and earned a starting role as a rookie. He became a cornerstone of The Hogs, played in four Super Bowls, and won three championships. When he was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2010, Russ honored the teammates who helped him get there by sewing their nicknames and initials into the lining of his Hall of Fame jacket.
After retiring following the 1991 season, Russ returned to Washington as a coach in 1992 and built a long NFL coaching career grounded in preparation and accountability. That perspective also shapes his view of youth sports: young athletes should be free to try different games, navigate overlapping seasons, and discover what they enjoy without losing the unstructured fun of being kids.
Russ jokingly described himself as an acting president of the team's 5:00 Club and the person who made sure the post-practice refreshments were ready.
